Wow! I live in a non-swing state which probably gets no campaign commercials at all, plus I don’t really watch any tv so I wouldn’t see them even if it did. But I watched this one and then clicked on several others that youtube offers after the video has played… They’re really good! If these are the ads Romney is actually running in swing states I’m even more encouraged! I guess I should go watch some Obama ads to see if they balance out my impressions but if I was undecided and saw some of these ads I think I would become decided pretty quickly.
By the way Keith, I don’t know how often you go back and catch up on or read comments from old posts but I made several posts about problems in your Clark County counts late last night (in the Clark County update thread named ‘Clark County Sunday Early Voting Keeps It Interesting’). If you haven’t already seen them you should probably take a look.
I think you and I chatted, right? I actually went back looking for those conversations because the Oct 20 2008 #s were wrong and are now corrected. If that was you, thank you very much.
Keith, No that was not me, we’ve never chatted. But the fact that you chatted with someone about October 20th’s numbers and corrected them would account for the fact that the 20th is the only day in your record of counts that actually matches the number of records in the data files. As I said in one of my comments last night “I have been getting slightly different counts than you all along but the difference was usually so minor I just chalked it up to quirks in my counting program and viewed the anomalies as relatively insignificant. But now that I’m checking it out and looking back there are discrepancies between your total counts and the number of lines (entries) in the data files for every day except the 20th. Like I said the discrepancies are pretty minor for every day except yesterday and today but I think you should still take a look at them. The discrepancies I get in the number of lines in each file versus your total counts per day, in order of date from the 20th are: 0,13,-20,5,1,-23,7,66,-801”; I also noted in the previous post to that one that regarding your counts from yesterday… “All three times I’ve downloaded it [the data file] I’ve gotten a file with 24487 lines in it. And your counts (11248, 8272, and 5768) add up to 25288… there aren’t enough entries in the file to justify those counts.”
Is anyone in Ohio is even still watching the ads? Ohio voters likely reached ad saturation quite some time ago. This is what makes the visits and messaging coming out of them so important.
Well, the auto bailouts are a topic which Romney has not mentioned a lot.
Same for Obamacare. And foreign policy. And a lot of corruption in the administration, including behind the Porkulus, Dodd-Frank, and Obamacare itself. Even poverty and the cost of living, including energy. And no one talks about education much. There’s a lot of ground which Romney has not covered, and some areas where he has not reached deeply enough.
This ad is perhaps too timid and unclear.
But the messaging has also been weak, apart from the candidates themselves in the debates. Some ads are simply awful, and Romney’s plans, unfortunately, still do not seem clear and substantive enough to many, mostly because of the packaging and marketing by the campaign (the candidates have been excellent). Introducing a positive agenda, not just for campaigning, but for governing, which elaborates on those five points, yet does not go back to that 59 point mess, could be a game-changer in the final days of the campaign, especially after that massive 20-page Chicago flop. It’d cement the sense of how he is Presidential, competent, caring, empathetic, honest, responsible, smart and above all, ready to lead.
McCain just couldn’t capture that feeling this late, and even Sarah couldn’t. But Mitt has the capability to.
If Romney running ads about the auto bailout in Ohio it’s a bad sign. That mean he is Losing and desperate.

Perhaps he’s just responding to a stupid, but useful, talking point, albeit in a weak way.
if he was losing and desperate he would have been doing these ads all along to refute the bailout line from the Obama campaign. This could be a last ditch effort to just try and flip a couple of last minute people.
You know like trying to get the last word in before it’s over.
Don’t think you can read too much into 1 ad campaign good or bad.
For what it’s worth, I live in Ohio & Sunday(football) is the only day I watch any network TV. Romney ads on at least every other break, mostly touting bipartisanship. Can’t recall a single Obama ad that aired.
What will be the storm’s effect in the election? New York was already 0+24 so I doubt the storm’s effects will have an effect on the election’s outcome in NY. NJ another Obama bastion. No change, However NC and VA and nearby states might be issues (from a R view) as some voters might look at this as a reminder of support from the administration in times past. It’s times like these when people may feel it’s nice to have a government willing to spend (not that R wouldn’t do the same) on their side and right now and the incumbent is the main benefactor of that.
We can talk about role of religion and so forth in this election but what gets me is the unprecedented timing of these storms that actually hurt republicans. First there were the storms at the convention. If the republican national convention was already an underwhelming event (in no small part due to its timing – right before labor day weekend), the storms made it look even more so. And now, another natural disaster is looming thanks again to another storm and again with impeccable timing. Super uncanny timing. Natural disasters tend to bring people together and focus attention on health and healing (i.e. recovery, cash for recovery, etc.) and those are all things that favor democrats right now. That said, it certainly is possible that early voting efforts will be impacted so that might help Republicans. Unfortunately, it’s seems to me there’s only downside for Romney in this and again the timing of these things is unreal. But no one said unseating an incumbent was going to be easy.

Charge-it!!!! so I doubt there would be little holdback for needed relief funds. But yeah,I get what your saying…ideally that is the way country managed its finances (if possible).
If R’s sense a movement in voting as a result of the storm (if they can poll) then perhaps Rs can run ads in affected areas saying we empathize with your situation and as pres R would do everything he can to assist homeowners and business owners in times of needs like these….whats important is that we regain our economic footing so we can better face disasters with strength and unity, etc., etc., blah, blah.
So, in other words, Romney runs ads that every politician wishes they could get away with? 😉
Perhaps but if there’s significant movement, you’ve got to do something. It’s not like they can just broadcast their message through the press….lol.
