Winning the Battleground News Cycle in Iowa

The Des Moines Register hasn’t endorsed a Republican since 1972, but lately the paper has been awful friendly to Mitt Romney.  Their endorsement comes out this weekend.  Here is today’s front page.  Which candidate do you think has the better outlook for voters?

I certainly hope so. Between the fantasy poll by TIME in Ohio and the Mourdock comments the MSM took a hard swing towards Obama inevitability over the last 24 hours.

How about the new national AP poll Romney + 2. Women polling even in the internals.

I would be shocked if the Des Moines Register endorsed Romney. If that happens, it’s only because they see the momentum of this race, and are conceeding that Romney’s gonna win. It would be huge.

On endorsements. Look how close Romney is to Obama:

4 flipping thus far, here’s the comparison:

    2012
    Obama 16, Romney 13

    2008
    Obama 65, McCain 25

    2004
    Kerry 51, Bush 33

I would be shocked. My guess is they go Obama.

My cynical take on this is based on how you framed that front page. Yes the headlines (written by the headline writer) do show a more upbeat Romney. But the photo and layout editor (and mayble Im too cynical) set these pics up for a reason. Notice in Obama’s pic it 1) looks like he is mobbed in the middle of the crowd 2) they shot it from behind him so it looks like his crowd is more expansive and 3) they make sure there are plenty of minorities and a campaign sign. With Romney he is on stage looking like he is stand offish to what looks like (in a pic) a very small, very white crowd.

Just my take…if they go Romney, it may just be a good sign for the state. Papers often go against the will of their own readers though. Kansas City Star and St. Louis Post Dispatch are the two big city papers here in Missouri and despite a fairly hard conservative turn the state has made, even in the cities. They continue to be the liberal bastions. They endorse all democrats even the far out weird ones but will usually pick 1 low ticket nobody republican, who is usually pro-abortion, pro-tax and anti-gun to endorse.
