Romney Actually Asked the “47% Pay No Taxes” Question in October 11, 2011 in New Hampshire — C-SPAN

WordPress won’t allow me to embed the video but here it is cleanly at the link: Romney answer on 47% paying no Federal taxes

Let’s just say his response is more lucid and responsive than the confusing clip from the private fundraiser.

Highlights:
“I don’t want to raise taxes on people that are not paying taxes today, in many cases [they] are poor”
He points out problems with the “Fair Tax” because “very high income people end up seeing a big reduction in taxes, and that’s not what I’m looking for and middle income people see higher taxes.”

Then Romney points out what he will do with taxes:
“The people who have been hurt most by the Obama economy are the middle income Americans. People at the low end receive some help and benefits–a safety net. People at the high end are doing just very well, thank you very much. And people in the middle, the great majority of Americans are having a real hard time. What I would do to help middle income Americans say for anyone making $200,000 a year and less you pay no tax on interest, dividends or capital gains. No tax on savings. So middle income Americans can save for college, can save for retirement, can save for whatever the heck they want and not have to pay tax on their savings.”

Hey Keith. I’m an Independent from NC (decided Romney) and a regular visitor to your site. Many thanks for your efforts.

I came across this article about this USA Today poll that made some claims about the impact of the Romney entitlement video particularly amongst Independents. Seems off to me as we are generally very concerned about the out-of-control spending. Your thoughts? Thanks in advance.

“Poll: A partisan divide on Romney’s ‘47%’ video

WASHINGTON — The secretly recorded video of Mitt Romney dissecting the American electorate at a high-priced fundraiser bolsters him among Republicans but makes almost a third of independents less likely to vote for him, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.

The survey, taken Tuesday, finds just over half of independents say the video won’t make a difference in their vote. Those who say it will have an effect by 2-1, 29%-15%, say it makes them less likely rather than more likely to support the GOP presidential nominee…”

Thanks for the link and the kind words. I think you are on the mark with your thoughts. Every single poll reveals that a strong majority of voters care first and foremost about economic issues this election. And that really boils down to two things: jobs and the deficit. Every poll shows those issues paramount with 60-70% of voters no matter what the survey breakdown may be. If Romney can aggressively frame the discussion around those issues, this will be a tempest in a tea pot. It seems like he is deftly doing that. The media has created dozens of firestorms this season which all have amounted to bunk: Seamus the dog, tax returns, London comments, Romney and Bain killed a man’s wife and on and on and on. The public has been impervious to the media’s attempts but they are still hungry for Romney to “make the sale.” Romney is in a good position as challenger at this juncture but he needs to really streamline his message and hammer it home from here on out. You saw that Independents largely blew off the video as well as they, like most Americans, are looking for solutions to what ails our failing economy. That is Romney’s opening, he just needs to take it. Thanks for the comment and keep fighting the good fight. You guys owe us one after 2008!

Haha, thanks Keith. Let’s just say that Repubs and Libertarians also need to keep their heads down amidst the media barrage and get to the polls! Clearly MSM and entertainment industry are trying hard to discourage all of us into staying home.

        NC- Romney +6 (fist pump)

That’s what spells the end for Romney. He was far behind before, but had a chance of he could snare pretty much every undecided vote. Now he can’t.
